Religion & My Beliefs
I know that this is a pretty controversial subject, I do not mean to offend anyone or cause any upset, I am just simply stating my views and opinions, I hope you all can respect and accept that :)
Since I was a little girl, I can never really remember having a strong belief system or faith. Being raised as a Catholic, I attended mass on a Sunday with my nanny (my mum's grandmother) and I went to a Catholic schools. I wrote a blog post about how religion pretty much divides my hometown Belfast and my country Northern Ireland. There are a few mixed religious schools but the majority are either Catholic or Protestant.
Since my parents are of different religious backgrounds, religion was never a massive deal in our house. Me and my sister were technically raised as Catholics (a term apparently put in place by our local chapel as an agreement for my parents marriage) as we both attended Catholic primary and secondary schools.
Because we have to wear uniforms in the majority of the U.K. it is easy to spot a certain schools uniform, usually displaying the name on the badge or just by the colours. This also caused problems growing up. Not so much in primary but definitely in secondary. This meant that being in certain areas of the city in your school uniform could mean trouble. Even going into the city centre was dangerous, because Belfast is quite a small city, everyone sort of knows and recognises different uniforms. Catholic schools especially are not half obvious with names like St Joesph's, Holy Cross or Christian Brother's.
Imagine not even feeling safe walking around in your school uniform at that age? It was tough let me tell you. Even my own area where I lived was predominantly Protestant so walking home from school I was nervous and literally don't think I have ever walked so fast in my life. Luckily I never got into a fight or got beaten up just because of my religion. I have lived in my area my whole life so I know the majority of the people in passing, I honestly think that might be the only reason.
I have never really believed in God or any sort of higher power. I think because my parents didn't have a massive influence on me that I just never really grew in the Catholic faith or any religion for that matter. So I think I can officially be called an atheist.
I honestly have so much respect for people who are passionately religious and have a very strong belief system, I just unfortunately do not. I think it's great that people believe in something and take comfort in believing that there is something after death. I really wish I had faith in something, believed in an afterlife and could actually be proud of a belief system I admired and trusted.
If anything, I partly believe in Buddhism. Buddhism is a tradition that focuses on personal spiritual development. Buddhists strive for a deep insight into the true nature of life and do not worship gods or deities. So not believing in a higher power and just focusing on myself is exactly what I do anyway.
Buddhists believe that nothing is fixed or permanent and that change is always possible. I kind of agree, I don't believe in fate or destiny. However I do believe that everything happens for a reason, not because it was meant to or supposed to, but that it just does. I don't think that their is a certain path set out for my life, I change my mind about things way too often. I like to believe that I have control over my life, that I am not just following some map that has already been drawn for me. I am the one who makes my decisions and shapes things the way I want them to be.
Buddhists believe in karma, as do I. What's the saying....what goes around comes around? I truly do believe that. They say that all the good and bad things that happen to us are the results of our past actions. It's all about the choices we make, the things we do & say and how we treat others. It actually takes more effort to be mean and nasty to someone than it does to just give a smile.
If you have another spare few minutes after reading this, then please check out this blog post I done a few months ago, it's about how we should all love each other and treat everyone equally.

I'm always interested to read other people's views on religion, as like you I am not religious but admire those that are. I really like what you said "I do believe that everything happens for a reason, not because it was meant to or supposed to, but that it just does." I completely agree. If you say you believe everything happens for a reason, I find people tend to roll their eyes at you, but I don't believe it's because somebody has laid out my destiny, but just because something happened which lead to something else happening etc. Great post xx

Hey Megan! Yeah it's nice to see different points of views isn't it? It is such an interesting topic because so many people believe so many different things.
DeleteYeah my thinking is that things do just happen, they aren't supposed to but they just do. I don't think that things happen because of certain or particular reasons but there are always reasons, whether it's to teach us a lesson or make us strong.
Thanks :) really appreciate you taking the time to read and esp comment :)

I find that it's lovely to see someone talk about their religion/beliefs! Great post

I know this can be a "controversial" subject, but I think you approached it so openly and unassumingly, so this was really nice to read. I do feel very similarly to you. Raised Catholic, but I don't connect to those religious beliefs or practices in any way. I personally don't have any religious values (at the moment) but do admire those who live their lives with true faith. I think maybe one day I may find something I really connect with, but until then I just try to be the best person I can!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this post! Gave me a bit of perspective x

Thanks Rebecca :) I really appreciate that!! Yeah that's how I feel, I don't feel like I have to be nice to people just because a God is judging me, I am nice to people because I treat others how I would like them to treat me.
DeleteKeep my updated if you ever do find a faith that you connect with :)

This is such a well-written post, and you approached the subject in such a nice way! I like you was raised a Catholic but drifted away as I started to have my own beliefs. Now I don't particularly practice any religion, but I definitely believe that every person is responsible for its own spiritual development. I really loved this post, keep up the good work!! :-) xx - The Libellule
ReplyDeleteThank you so much The Libellule :) that means a lot to me. I'm glad we share the same views on this topic, it's nice to know I'm not the only one! Keep in touch :)

Great post! My parents were of different religious backgrounds, Jewish and Catholic and they decided to raise us without any religion at all. So this kind of topic is always of interest!

It's so interesting isn't that? It most countries and religions, you can not marry outside of your culture or belief system. So I think it's great when people do :)

I think it was cool that you managed to share your opinion on such a big topic. It's definitely awful that so many people feel uncomfortable or could be in danger simply because of the uniform they were wearing. :( That makes me sad to hear. But then again, clashing within religions happen all over the world. I'm a Christian, and I tell you I think every religion has it's own form of "karma". I mean, Buddhism stresses it a lot, but in Christianity it's more like, give and do good acts and you shall receive for the more you pour. Only pour badness and that is what returns to you. And if all religions (or basically all do) agree on something similar, it must be right, hm?
ReplyDeleteMaybe religions would co-operate if they focused on what they had in common instead of debating on what they didn't. Hm,

Thanks Olivia :) yeah I know it was a bit risky doing this type of post but it's just about my personal opinion, I wasn't trying to offend anyone, just expressing my beliefs.
DeleteIt makes me sad too, it wasn't so tough for me thank goodness but for others it can be a very scary and serious matter.
My way of thinking is more of a way of life, how I want to live rather than a faith if that makes sense? I treat others how I want to be treated in return, I always try to do the right thing and I try to be kind whenever I can.
Yeah I agree, I don't get why there is such bad blood between certain religions, everyone should be allowed to believe what they want. Who cares if we don't agree with it? As long as they are not harming others, then let them have faith in whatever they want.
